Chapter 125: Gatomon Holds Her Own
Du Sheng paid no attention to his younger brother’s howls. He understood his brother’s personality well enough. His gaze shifted to the Greymon standing on top of Leomon, then to Zhao Jie beside it.
“Student, couldn’t we discuss this calmly? The way you’re acting now could be interpreted as a provocation against us upperclassmen, couldn’t it?”
The moment he said this, quite a few people frowned inwardly.
Du Sheng had immediately placed a heavy accusation on Zhao Jie’s head. With great subtlety, he had elevated the conflict between Zhao Jie and his younger brother into a dispute between upperclassmen and freshmen, making the many upperclassmen instinctively more willing to stand on his side.
“Heh.”
Zhao Jie let out a cold laugh. He had seen through the malicious intent behind those words at once. Signaling Greymon not to stop, he turned to face the substitute member of the school team.
“Originally, we could have discussed this properly. But this barking mutt refused to cooperate. What, now that your good buddy has suffered a loss, you’ve come here to lecture me about reason? Where were you earlier?”
A mocking smile curled across Zhao Jie’s face. With every other word, he had compared Du Zhongping to a dog. And as the dog’s brother—
Wasn’t Du Sheng a dog too?
The logic was easy enough to grasp, and everyone looked at Zhao Jie with admiration.
To call a Digimon Tamer who possessed an Ultimate-level Digimon a dog took extraordinary nerve. They admired the freshman’s courage, though it seemed likely that he would soon suffer for it.
Du Sheng was nothing like his frivolous and short-tempered brother. If he made a move, this freshman would probably be manipulated into a miserable position.
“You…”
Du Zhongping was just about to speak when he caught his brother’s stern gaze. His heart faltered, and in the end he said nothing, merely snorting coldly.
“It was nothing more than a minor misunderstanding. Once everything is explained, it will be settled. But the way you’re behaving now is already unreasonable. When the Student Union arrives, I’m afraid things won’t end well for you.”
Du Sheng spoke in an unhurried manner, utterly unconcerned by the hidden sarcasm in Zhao Jie’s words.
“At worst, you’ll be punished. At worst, you’ll be saying goodbye to Xiang University altogether! It wasn’t easy for a student like you to get into Xiang University, so I advise you to think carefully. Which matters more—your pride or your future?”
His threat drifted out lightly. Under everyone’s watchful eyes, the Leomon beside him began walking toward Zhao Jie and Greymon.
His pride or his future?
Looking at this substitute member of the school team, who appeared calm but was arrogant to the core, Zhao Jie finally understood why Xiang University’s results in the national championships had been declining year after year. Apparently, it wasn’t merely because all the outstanding students had gone to the Imperial Capital and the Magic Capital.
A mere substitute from the school team actually dared to openly tell a student to leave the university. Who, exactly, was in charge of this school?
“Heh, you mangy cur. You’re threatening your grandpa now? Believe it or not, if I leave Xiang University, I’ll join Imperial Capital University or Magic Capital University the very next day. You’re only a substitute on the school team, yet look at how capable you think you are.”
“You’d better stop right there!”
The final sentence was directed at the advancing Leomon.
Even a clay figure had a temper. This man had shown up acting superior, refused to apologize, and now had the nerve to threaten him!
Did he really think he was someone important?
So what if he had an Ultimate-level Digimon? Zhao Jie had two of them!
Er…
Silence fell over the surrounding area. Everyone had assumed that the freshman would submit under Du Sheng’s threat. No one had expected him to be so hot-tempered.
He was practically a walking powder keg!
“Leave Xiang University and join Imperial Capital University or Magic Capital University the very next day? You could make your bragging a little grander. And I hereby announce that you are expelled from Xiang University!”
Du Sheng scoffed. He had not taken Zhao Jie’s words seriously, believing them to be nothing more than the stubborn bluster of a young man.
If they had been somewhere private, he could have let it pass. But with so many eyes upon them, he had no choice but to say he was sorry.
“If you’re so capable, go join Imperial Capital University or Magic Capital University. I’d like to see whether they’ll even accept you!”
Du Zhongping’s voice rose at just the right moment, his long face filled with schadenfreude.
“Leomon, this person is no longer a student of Xiang University. You don’t need to hold back.”
At Zhao Jie’s cold shout, Leomon had originally halted. But after hearing Du Sheng’s order, it began moving again, this time much faster, its entire body charging toward Greymon.
Zhao Jie was so furious that he began to laugh. He had been expelled by a student on his very first day at the university. The thought was absurd enough to be amusing.
“Gatomon, stop it!”
Swish!
Without needing any further instruction from Zhao Jie, Gatomon appeared in Leomon’s path.
The Holy Ring on its tail radiated sacred power, enhancing its physical abilities.
Gatomon: No one can break through my defense.
“Cat’s Eye!”
Gatomon moved with incredible speed. Its body seemed like a phantom clinging to Leomon’s side, the sharp claws of both paws striking again and again.
Clang!
Leomon frowned and swung the demonic blade in its hand, trying to drive Gatomon away. Its strength was far greater than that of the previous Leomon.
Yet even so, it still had no effective way to deal with Gatomon. It could only remain where it was and fight back against the relentless assault.
“Gatomon’s problem really is serious!”
Zhao Jie rested one hand against his chin as he watched Gatomon battle Leomon.
Earlier, Gatomon had fought the merely Champion-level Leomon to a draw. Now it was fighting this Leomon, which could undergo further evolution, to another draw.
So the question was: how exactly did Gatomon manage to fight every opponent to a perfect stalemate, appearing neither disadvantaged nor dominant?
“Should Gatomon actually be called Gatomon Kakashi?”
Zhao Jie shook his head and discarded the ridiculous thought. His gaze shifted to the Leomon being suppressed by Greymon.
“Whimper…”
At that moment, the Leomon repeatedly shook its head, looking at Zhao Jie as though begging for mercy.
“Are you all right?” Zhao Jie asked with concern as he crouched down beside it.
“Whimper.”
Leomon shook its head repeatedly, as if insisting that it would never dare claim otherwise.
“You said it yourself. I was originally going to compensate you, but since you’re fine, don’t blame me for not paying you.”
Zhao Jie patted Leomon on the head, then gestured for Greymon to lift its foot from the Digimon’s body and set it free.
“So Gatomon really is the queen of draws!”
As Zhao Jie watched Gatomon and Leomon locked in combat, a serious question suddenly occurred to him.
Had the Light Fruit really been eaten for nothing?
