Chapter 1: Transmigration

【An Alternate-Era Novel】
Summer, 1976.
Sunward Village cornfield.
Su Wanwan’s head suddenly split with pain. A man’s voice came from beside her.
“Wanwan, we’re in the cornfield. No one will find us here.” Ma Zhiming impatiently began undoing his buttons, one foot still planted on a corn stalk. “Once we’ve done it, I’ll go to your house tomorrow to ask for your hand in marriage.”
Su Wanwan was dazed for a moment. Confused, she glanced around, but darkness surrounded her.
Only in the moonlight could she make out the corn stalks all around them.
Su Wanwan pressed a hand to her aching head.
She pinched the flesh of her arm hard, trying to keep her mind clear.
Ahead of her, the man had already trampled down a large patch of corn and spread his clothes over it.
The heat burning through her body quickly made her understand.
The man’s intentions were obvious.
He wanted to have his way with her here.
She had no time to think about what had happened. She had to leave immediately.
Staggering, she began making her way back.
After laying out his clothes, Ma Zhiming looked behind him and saw Su Wanwan walking away.
That would never do. It had taken him considerable effort to coax her into the cornfield. Afraid that he might fail, he had even slipped something into her soda.
Assuming she was merely frightened, he hurried after her, seized her arm, and said gently, “Wanwan, don’t be afraid. Don’t you want to marry me?”
Panicked, Su Wanwan wrenched her arm free, kicked him, and roared, “Get lost!”
“Ugh.” Ma Zhiming let out a muffled groan. Caught completely off guard, he had been kicked in a sensitive spot. He instantly doubled over, trembling as he said, “Wan... Wanwan, you kicked me.”
Su Wanwan turned and headed away. She had to escape before the man recovered; in her current condition, she would certainly be no match for him.
Pushing aside one corn stalk after another, she suddenly found a vast stretch of woods ahead. Without hesitation, she entered the forest.
Her first priority was to protect herself.
Perhaps the drug had begun taking effect. Her entire body felt weak and limp, and her steps were unsteady. She continued deeper into the woods, stumbling until she finally hid behind a large tree and slid down against its trunk.
Just then, a violent stab of pain shot through her head. More memories that did not belong to her surged into her mind.
She received every one of the original host’s memories.
She had transmigrated into a book—an unfinished period novel she had once read—and become Su Wanwan, a character who shared her name.

She was the cannon-fodder supporting female character who had been schemed against by the male lead, Ma Zhiming. In the end, her entire family would die because of the male and female leads.
Su Wanwan quickly recalled the plot.
Ma Zhiming was an educated youth sent to the countryside. Unable to endure the hardships of rural life, he earned too few work points to support himself. If he wanted to return to the city early, he had to obtain a coveted return permit from the brigade leader. That was why he had set his sights on the original Su Wanwan.
She was the brigade leader’s daughter. Her family had the best conditions in the village, and both her figure and appearance were outstanding.
Ma Zhiming intended to deceive her into becoming his unregistered wife in the countryside. That way, he could solve his food problem and gain a free housekeeper as well.
Once he obtained a return permit from the brigade leader and went back to the city, he would abandon the uneducated country girl and find a cultured woman from a well-off urban family to spend his life with.
That way, no one would laugh at him for marrying a country bumpkin.
Ma Zhiming had a refined, scholarly appearance. He liked to clip a fountain pen to his breast pocket to make himself look educated, and every day he dressed in a polished, gentlemanly manner while hovering before the original Su Wanwan.
She had already liked him, so within half a month the two had become a couple.
They were always meeting in secret—sometimes at their work sites, sometimes after finishing dinner following the day’s labor.
Ma Zhiming was skilled at making her happy. He could shower her with every kind of sweet promise.
Su Wanwan would save portions of her own food to give him in secret—eggs, braised pork, pastries, and the like. She even gave him money and ration coupons.
Tonight, Ma Zhiming had devised a scheme to take her virtue. With a stream of sweet words, he had coaxed and deceived her into the cornfield, then given her a bottle of drugged soda.
Afterward, he successfully married the original Su Wanwan. Every step unfolded exactly as he had planned, and he also became involved with Liu Caixia, another educated youth.
Liu Caixia was the female lead. She, too, had secretly become involved with the original heroine’s second brother, using him to secure a better life in the village. Later, when the second brother discovered her relationship with Ma Zhiming, the two of them conspired to frame him and have him sent to a labor farm for reeducation, where he eventually died in an accident.
At the same time, after Ma Zhiming obtained his return permit, he feared that his parents-in-law would cause trouble for him in the future. He struck first, framing the older couple and having them sent to a labor farm, where they would never have the chance to rise again.
Ma Zhiming openly carried on with Liu Caixia, who subjected the original Su Wanwan to every kind of humiliation. In the end, Su Wanwan died at the hands of Ma Zhiming and Liu Caixia.
After losing their son and daughter one after another, her parents died of grief.
Her eldest brother served in the army. When he returned home on leave after completing a mission and learned everything that had happened, he hunted down Ma Zhiming and Liu Caixia to avenge his family. Both were sentenced to death.
The entire family had been nothing but cannon fodder.
And today was her first day working at the company owned by the man she had secretly loved.
He was also the person who had secretly loved her throughout their university years: Xie Beishen.
After graduating from university, she had finally summoned the courage to pursue Xie Beishen.
Her family owned businesses in numerous industries—medicine, catering, real estate, biotechnology, gaming, automobile manufacturing, and aviation. She had gone to none of them. Instead, she had joined Xie Beishen’s company solely to pursue him.
The moment she entered the office building, she heard everyone discussing the news that Xie Beishen had died the previous night. Shocked, she fainted on the spot.
When she opened her eyes again, she had been transported to the scene where the original Su Wanwan was about to lose her virtue.
Hot.

All Su Wanwan could feel now was heat.
If only her dimensional space had come with her. It contained injectable medicines.
As soon as she thought this, a syringe appeared in her hand.
Su Wanwan stared at it in delighted surprise. The worry in her heart instantly eased.
She tried to enter the space with her mind.
Huh? Why couldn’t she get in?
She tried again, but still could not enter.
The object in her hand told her that the space must have come with her after all.
But why could she not enter it?
She had no time to dwell on the question. The heat raging through her body had already reached its peak.
Cold sweat covered her from head to toe. Her eyes began to grow unfocused. With trembling hands, she opened the syringe, jabbed it into her arm, and injected the medicine.
All she could think about was how desperately she wanted the medicine to take effect.
The drug was far too potent. Every part of her body felt unbearable.
“Mm... mm...” Was she really going to have to find someone to relieve this?
“Mm...” She did not want to find some random man to solve the problem.
The injection had eased her condition somewhat, but it had not completely resolved it.
At this rate, she had no idea how long she would have to endure.
If she went home now, Ma Zhiming might be waiting somewhere along the road she had to take. Returning home could mean walking straight into his hands.
As it happened, Su Wanwan’s guess was correct. Ma Zhiming was waiting along the road she would have to take home. He certainly could not allow someone else to take advantage of her; otherwise, the brigade leader would make him pay dearly.
From the original host’s memories, Su Wanwan knew that there was a pool on the mountain not far from here. Its water was warm in winter and cool in summer—a truly remarkable place.
She struggled to her feet, shook her muddled head, and began walking toward the pool on the mountain.
Su Wanwan had never walked at night before, much less on a pitch-black mountain. With only the moonlight to guide her, she forced herself onward.
Her legs were too weak to support her, and she fell to the ground. The sharp pain in her palm brought her a little clarity.
She got up again, shook her dizzy head, and continued toward the nearby pool.
She planned to endure the effects in the water for a while. At least she knew how to swim.
Meanwhile, Xie Beishen came to this crystal-clear pool every night to bathe.
