At that very moment, my head suddenly spun, and everything before my eyes blurred into a wash of gray and white. When my vision finally cleared, I suddenly found myself standing opposite my grandfather, Heaven’s Crybreaker in my hand. Beside him stood another me—my childhood self.

I was stunned once again. As I looked at my grandfather lying on the ground, I tried to walk toward him, but he suddenly spoke.

“Xuan, what on earth are you trying to do? Why did you attack me? I’m your grandfather! How could you—”

Before he could finish, my grandfather clutched his chest and spat out another mouthful of blood. I shook my head in panic and tried to run toward him, but an invisible barrier seemed to block my path. I had no choice but to remain where I was and shout, “Grandpa, I didn’t hurt you! How could I ever hurt you? Grandpa!”

Before my words had even faded, the second me, crouching beside my grandfather, suddenly pointed at me.

“It was you! You’re the one who hurt Grandpa! You must pay with your life!”

I shook my head and put Heaven’s Crybreaker away.

“Grandpa, I didn’t hurt you! He was the one who attacked you just now! It was him! Can’t you see him?”

I pointed frantically at the second me as well. Watching me, my grandfather said, “Xuan, what’s wrong with you? Wake up!”

His words left me completely stunned. Just moments ago, he had accused me of hurting him. Why was he now telling me to wake up?

I stared at him in confusion. Suddenly, his expression changed, and he spoke again.

“There’s no one there! Xuan, why did you hurt me? Why?”

As soon as he finished speaking, blood gushed from his mouth, and he collapsed onto the ground.

My heart pounded wildly. I shouted and rushed toward him, but the invisible barrier sent me flying backward, and I crashed to the floor.

As I stared at everything before me, Chubby, Iron Pillar, and the others suddenly changed as well. One after another, they pointed at me.

“Lin Xuan, Old Master Lin treated you so well. Why did you kill him?”

“That’s right. I truly misjudged you back then. Chubby was right—you’re an idiot, a devil! You even killed your own grandfather. You don’t deserve to be human!”

“You’re a demon! You killed Old Master Lin. Just wait until you’re thrown in prison, just wait until you descend into hell! You killed Old Master Lin! It was you!”

I lay sprawled on the ground as those words poured into my ears. In agony, I covered my ears and could endure no more. I cried out, “I didn’t kill Grandpa! I didn’t kill Grandpa!”

“It was you! It was you!”

Suddenly, I felt as though countless people had gathered around me. Familiar voices rang out from every direction—my master, my grandmother, Chu Mengxi, Yu Wenzhou, and even Lin Fang. They all cursed me.

“How dare you kill the old family head? You’re not worthy of becoming the head of the Lin family, you bastard! I’ll send you to the underworld to pay for his life!”

I covered my ears in agony, feeling as though my head were about to split apart. Even my master, who had always treated me well, was berating me now. He cursed me in disappointment.

“You wretched boy! I must have been blind to accept you as my disciple. You even killed your own grandfather—are you even human? From this day forth, the bond between master and disciple is severed. I will kill you with my own hands and bury you beside Old Master Lin!”

“I didn’t kill Grandpa! I didn’t kill Grandpa!”

I cried out helplessly.

More and more people gathered around me, spitting their contempt. I curled up on the ground and sobbed while they kicked me several times and spat on me. I paid them no attention. My thoughts had become a tangled mess, and gradually, I was infected by the voices condemning me.

Like a madman, with my hair in disarray, I said, “That’s right. I killed Grandpa. I killed Grandpa. I’ll pay with my life. I’ll pay for Grandpa’s life. Heh heh…”

By the end, I began to laugh foolishly.

Without my summoning it, Heaven’s Crybreaker flew out on its own, as if even the weapon were condemning me. I stared at the spearhead and gave a foolish smile, only to hear someone speak.

“That’s right. You must pay for your grandfather’s life. Go on, go on. Death is the only release.”

I did not think about those words. I suddenly charged forward, the spearhead aimed directly at my abdomen. My mind was completely blank. The curses around me continued without pause, and neither did I stop.

Just as I was about to impale myself on Heaven’s Crybreaker, I suddenly felt my mind shudder. Someone seized my arm and yanked it violently, and all the voices around me abruptly fell silent.

I came to my senses with a start. Looking around, I realized that I had returned to the hotel. My master was gripping my hand tightly.

Drenched in sweat, I turned to look at him. He stared back at me and shouted, “What the hell are you doing? Have you gone mad?”

I panted heavily, my heart racing, and glanced behind me. I was standing in front of an open window. If my master had not pulled me back, I might well have jumped out.

I looked around in panic. My master walked over, and I immediately threw myself into his arms. He froze for a moment, then looked at me suspiciously.

“What’s wrong, boy? Why are you crying?”

I swallowed and sobbed, “I…I thought everything that just happened was real. I kept saying I hadn’t killed Grandpa. How could I ever kill him?”

My master was utterly bewildered.

“What are you talking about? What do you mean, killing your grandfather? What happened to you just now?”

I straightened up, wiped away my tears, and told him everything that had happened. He was deeply shocked when he heard it.

“You returned to the past?”

I nodded tearfully.

My master thought for a moment, then patted my shoulder reassuringly.

“It’s all right. It was all false. There’s no way you would do something like that. It’s over now. I’m here. Don’t be afraid.”

I nodded and wiped my tears again.

Li Muyang looked at me, took a sheet of paper from his pocket, and handed it to me. I accepted it. My master then continued, “You must have entered an illusion just now. You weren’t the only one affected—I was caught in it too, and so was Li Muyang. We simply woke up faster. I also used the Primordial Spirit Technique to enter your memories and call you back, but you still wouldn’t awaken. So I had no choice but to use force. That was the only way I could pull you out.”

After hearing my master’s explanation, I nodded. I recalled how, within the illusion, my grandfather’s tone had suddenly changed as he told me to wake up. If I was not mistaken, that had been my master’s voice calling me back.

Once I had steadied my emotions, I looked around and asked, “Why did we fall into an illusion?”

My master shook his head.

“Hard to say.”

The moment he finished speaking, a sinister, shrill laugh echoed through the dark banquet hall.

My master spun around and darted toward the sound. But the instant he landed, the lights in the banquet hall suddenly came on.

The sight before me left me speechless. Li Muyang was startled by what he saw and let out a loud cry, while my master stood in the center of the banquet hall, his brows tightly furrowed.

The guests who had been full of life only moments earlier now lay motionless across the floor. Deep wounds had appeared on their necks, their faces were deathly pale, and blood had stained the entire floor red.

My master crouched down and examined several of them. They were all dead.

I ran over to check the others and felt for their breath. My master looked at me, and I slowly shook my head.

He sighed and walked to the side. I followed him. Li Muyang stared fearfully around the room and asked us, “Senior, Lin Xuan…what happened to them? Are they all dead?”

Neither my master nor I said anything. We simply nodded.

Li Muyang’s expression turned grim. He swallowed nervously and edged closer to us.

I was momentarily taken aback, but I immediately realized what he was thinking.

“Are you scared?”

Li Muyang nodded, abandoning all concern for his pride.

“What’s there to be afraid of?” I said. “That’s how the paranormal world is. Life and death are ordinary things.”

The moment I finished speaking, Li Muyang retorted, “Then why were you so scared just now?”

I knew he was referring to what had happened inside the illusion. I was just about to kick him lightly when my master waved his hand and stroked his chin.

“All right, stop fooling around. It looks like we’re about to get busy again. Boy, call Lin Fang first and tell him to send people to the scene.”

I nodded and dialed Lin Fang’s number.

It was not long before he answered.

“Head of the family?”

I acknowledged him, then said with a frown, “Send people to the top floor of the Grandview Hotel immediately. Hurry!”
