Chapter 139: Besieged by the Horde
Yang Guangyu and his party ultimately took no action. The man was not a fool; he knew who was truly reliable in this situation. If they were to actually make a move, there was no telling if they would even make it out alive, and Old Man Ma would certainly never let them off the hook.
Yun Mutian said nothing more, treating his previous words as a mere joke.
I glared at him viciously. This bastard was truly treacherous and venomous; he was constantly plotting against my life! If I did not take revenge for this, my name is not Wang!
*Rustle... rustle...* An unnatural sound suddenly echoed from nearby. We immediately turned our heads to look, only to see the man who had just been bitten to death by the snake crawling up from the darkness!
"W-what is going on? H-he... isn't he dead?" Yang Baoshu stammered, trembling with fear.
One of the henchmen asked cautiously, "A-Agui, are... are you alright?"
The man said nothing. The swelling on his body had subsided, and his skin had taken on a bizarre, dark purple hue. He walked over with a vigorous, agile gait, devoid of any of the stiff, uncanny movements of a marionette; he looked like a perfectly normal living person.
Was this guy really not dead? Given the state he was in just moments ago, how could he still be alive? It was impossible! Yet, his actions were nothing like those of someone possessed by a two-headed snake.
"Gurgle... gurgle..." A strange, guttural sound emanated from his throat. He raised both hands and lunged suddenly, grabbing a henchman and biting down straight into the man's neck! A piercing scream echoed through the pit!
Yang Guangyu and his group scattered. The man who had been bitten shrieked in agony, his expression contorted and wretched, but the screaming abruptly ceased as his body swelled up, his skin turned black, and his breathing stopped entirely.
No! This man was already dead! And he was indeed possessed! I guessed that the physical form of the possessed varied depending on the size of the snake that inhabited it.
"Didn't we sprinkle black dog blood? Why isn't it working?" The village head turned pale with fright, edging closer to us in a panic.
Old Man Ma leaped to the front, watching vigilantly. "The black dog blood can only suppress them temporarily. Once that evil snake possesses a corpse, it gains a protective layer, rendering the blood ineffective!"
Gu Sangong sneered, "This stuff is useless. It’s not even as good as my black talismans!"
Old Man Ma retorted angrily, "Don't you dare mess around! Do you want everyone here to die? Keep those pieces of junk of yours put away in front of me! Don't force me to deal with you!"
Gu Sangong still held some fear of Old Man Ma and fell silent. The possessed corpse rushed over, but Old Man Ma nimbly leaped into the air, dodged the attack, landed behind the body, and slammed his hand down onto its crown!
The corpse shuddered violently, yet the snake possessing it was not forced out.
"Now that this thing has grown larger, its abilities have increased as well. Good apprentice, watch closely—I’ll teach you another technique!" As Old Man Ma spoke, he chanted a mantra in the ancient Yue language and struck the corpse's forehead with his palm!
The corpse gave a sharp jolt and collapsed to the ground. Its clothes rippled, and a two-headed snake as thick as an arm crawled out from within.
It didn't crawl out of the mouth this time? Then where did it enter from?
Just as everyone was about to heave a sigh of relief, a dense sound of footsteps emerged from the surrounding darkness!
Phone lights swept across the area, revealing figure after figure emerging from the shadows. Among them was a familiar face—the old man whose soul had returned during the funeral earlier! All those possessed corpses were down here!
More and more corpses emerged from the surroundings, packed densely and beyond counting. My God! How could there be so many bodies here? It was impossible for that many people to have died in the village over the past five years!
These people were of all ages, their clothing styles varied, and there were even some in Qing Dynasty attire, with shaved heads and braided queues!
"It seems this place has existed for a very long time. I just don't know why those snakes never came out until they reappeared five years ago," Old Man Ma remarked.
The sight of the dense crowd of figures made my skin crawl. "Don't these possessed corpses rot?"
"This thing is filled with extreme evil. Once it possesses a body, the corpse is enveloped in malevolent energy and nourished by yin, making it like a zombie—immortal and incorruptible!" Old Man Ma replied.
"We're finished! We're dead for sure! Old Ma! What are we going to do?" The village head trembled, completely paralyzed by fear, cowering behind us alongside Yang Baoshu.
Yang Guangyu and his group were also shaking uncontrollably, terrified, huddled close to us and Gu Sangong.
The dense swarm of corpses rushed over. Old Man Ma suddenly launched an attack, moving with incredible agility, darting here and there, using the same method to take down several of them one after another.
I was physically hindered and could only deal with the corpses closing in on me. After a period of training, I had fully adapted to Old Man Ma's "one-shot" teaching method; using his techniques, I became quite proficient after only a few attempts.
As for Tu'e, there was no need to worry about him at all. He darted nimbly through the crowd of corpses, knocking down a large swathe of them with ease. That guy was terrifyingly strong!
"Good apprentice! Don't let others look down on you!" Gu Sangong called out.
"Don't worry, Master! I won't be like a woman, cowering in someone else's arms waiting for protection!"
That grandson Yun Mutian really had a foul mouth!
Several corpses suddenly lunged toward me. I was startled, dragged my leg, and dodged to the side, immediately chanting the mantra and slapping them on their foreheads!
The corpses fell to the ground, but I saw Yun Mutian standing behind them, flashing a sinister, cunning smile at me!
Those corpses were the ones he had intentionally lured over! I hadn't even settled my previous score with him, yet he was constantly plotting to take my life!
The boy didn't stop there. Relying on his sound limbs and agility, he darted about while firing off ice-bone needles. His needles hadn't been effective against the smaller two-headed snakes above, and they were even less effective against these larger ones.
However, these useless needles served one purpose: to grab the attention of the possessed corpses, manipulating their movements to surround me!
The bastard was intentionally exploiting my limited mobility to drive me to my death! I had never seen anyone so treacherous. Damn it! A gentleman does not let a grudge go unavenged!
More and more corpses gathered around me. I was overwhelmed; with my injured leg, I couldn't dodge. I shot a hateful glare at the boy, who stood outside the circle, flashing a smug, triumphant grin at me.
Several corpses attacked me simultaneously, lunging forward. I had just finished dealing with a few, and before I could even chant the mantra, they were already closing in on me!
A gust of cold wind brushed past my ear, and the corpses suddenly shuddered, thrown backward by a powerful force. I froze. What was going on? Did they have a seizure?
